It doesn’t take long to realize where you’ll be spending the majority of your time (read: life) after college. Forty hours a week, and that’s if you’re lucky. After a while, it’s likely that your white office or gray cubicle walls will become a bit dull to look at and quite frankly, uninviting. Plus, I’ll never forget when a colleague at my first job said that an un-decorated office is the first sign of someone on the move. Make sense, right? If you don’t “move in,” you have less to “move out.”
Don’t get me wrong… There’s nothing wrong with an empty office. In fact, some people could be at the same job for 20 years and never think twice about bringing in some “decorations.” You’re there to work, right?
Yes, of course. But if you’re like me, you want to make the space you spend the majority of your time a little more comfortable. It doesn’t have to be a snooze-fest. Jenna has given us some fabulous tips for decorating your first apartment — but what about your office? It’s not the place for home decor but perhaps, just a little bit of personality?!
So what screams “office?” Plants, pieces of art, a calendar, some photos. What’s the happy medium between professional and fun?
I, for one, am still trying to figure that out. Right away, I knew the first things I wanted to add to my office were some pictures. Photos are great conversation-starters with new colleagues, i.e. “This was in Italy!” They’re a little bit fun… for cheap. Now, I’m not talking bright, collage frames that are just so-college, but perhaps a nice, classy frame with a decent photo or two?
Choose your photos wisely – after all – it’s what you’ll be staring at (or initiating your day dreams from) indefinitely! After finding some appropriate pics (and by “appropriate” I mean no bathing suits, no beer cans, no clubs, no kissing your sweetie, etc.), you have to check out Shutterfly.com before simply ordering some prints. They have some great photo products (like the customized mouse pad I made in the past) that are fun… and yes… professional! Pen holders, magnets, bulletin board frames, you name it. Stuff that’s perfect for your office!
My most recent purchase was this cute little pen holder that displays a fun memory for me while looking profesh! Shutterfly makes it easy to add some photos to your office without filling your space full of tacky frames.
