One of my friends called my last weekend with a very serious question: What kind of cocktails can I make using wine? Yes, very serious indeed. Sure there’s the usual sangria recipe but she was looking for something different. Don’t want to be hungover? I suggest avoiding the tequila. These are the cocktails you make if you don’t feel like going all-out on a Wednesday or if you’re looking for a low-key New Years Eve.
Here are a few recipes I discovered during my search for the answer to her question.
1 bottle of Sutter Home White Zinfandel
2 cans of frozen Pink Lemonade
2 cans of Sprite
Combine all the ingrediants in a large punch bowl and serve! I like this recipe but I think I would substitute the White Zin with some Reisling to give it an even sweeter taste.
1 cup of chilled Prosecco
2 tablespoons of chilled Vodka
1/3 cup of frozen Lemon Sorbet
1/4 teaspoon of chopped fresh Mint Leaves
Pour vodka and prosecco into champagne flutes. Spoon a scoop of sorbet into flute. Sprinkle with mint.
And for our Red Wine Lovers…
Red Wine Spritzer
1/2 pint of Blackberries
1/2 pint of Raspberries
1 bottle (750 ml) dry red Italian table wine
1 quart of sparkling water or seltzer
Put the berries at the bottom of a wine glass. Pour the wine over the berries and let it sit for 10 minutes. Right before serving pour (chilled) seltzer in.
3 scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream
8 oz Club Soda
8 oz Red Wine
Sprinkle of Sugar
Add in the order listed. Do not shake. (I clearly choose this one because it had ice cream in it. Yum!)
There were literally dozens more I could have added (many of them including hard liquor) but didn’t have the space to fit them all. A simple “wine cocktail” search in Google will give you plenty of other options. And in case you’re not feeling like whipping up a cocktail check out our past wine reviews of Moscato and Soft Red.
